Philadelphia Eagles in a glance

The Philadelphia Eagles were born in 1933 with the decision of the NFL to increase the number of teams, with Bert Bell and Lud Wray as owners. The first decade of the team was not very successful, and their first appearance in the NFL playoffs was in 1947. A memorable year was 1943, when the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers merged, affectionately called the "Steagles," due to a shortage of men during World War II. The Eagles won their first NFL championship in 1948, and their second the following year. It would take eleven years for Eagles fans to celebrate again, when in 1960, after several difficult seasons, they defeated Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers for their third NFL championship. From 1961, the Eagles would not make the playoffs again until 1978, but in 1980, they reached the Super Bowl, only to be defeated by the Raiders. It was not until the arrival of coach Andy Reid in 1999 that the team would experience similar success, building a strong team that made it to the Super Bowl in 2004, but ultimately lost to Tom Brady's Patriots. Redemption for the Eagles and their "revenge" would come after thirteen years, in 2017, when they defeated the Patriots and won their first and only Super Bowl.
