New York Jets in a glance

The New York Jets were founded in 1959 as the Titans of New York and were one of the original teams in the American Football League (AFL) in 1960. The team's founder, Harry Wismer, proposed the addition of another team from New York during the meeting to create the AFL (the first being the New York Giants, who played in the rival league, the NFL), and thus the Jets participated in the first AFL championship in 1960. Wismer chose the initial name Titans as a nod to the myth that Titans were stronger than Giants. However, the early years for the Titans were financially challenging, leading to the sale of the team to Sonny Werblin and his partners in 1963. In the same year, the team changed its name to the Jets and relocated to a different stadium. They moved to their current stadium in 1984. In 1968, the Jets had their best season to date, winning the AFL championship and advancing to the Super Bowl, where they became the first AFL team to defeat an NFL team in the Super Bowl and claim the title. Since then, the New York Jets have not been able to reach another Super Bowl, and have only made it to the playoffs thirteen times. Their most recent notable run ended in 2010 in the conference finals.
