New Orleans Saints in a glance

On November 1, 1966, on All Saints' Day, the NFL created its 16th team, based in New Orleans. As a natural consequence of the holiday, the team was named the Saints by its owner, John W. Mecom Jr. The New Orleans Saints began their competitive journey in 1967. The people of New Orleans supported the team enthusiastically from the very beginning. However, the Saints were not able to bring much joy to their fans, enduring many tough seasons initially, and it took them 20 years until they finished a regular season with a winning record in 1987. In the same season, they made the playoffs for the first time. Two years prior, the Saints changed ownership, bringing in a new general manager and a new head coach, Jim Mora, and with them, they found the path to a better era. Under Mora, they made it to the postseason four times (1987, 1990, 1991, 1992), but without achieving anything noteworthy. 2009 was the year that all Saints fans had been waiting for. With Drew Brees at QB and Sean Payton as head coach, acquired three years earlier in 2006, the team had its most successful season in history, winning the Super Bowl for the first and only time. In the following years, the Saints continued to be considered contenders for the championship, but did not make it all the way.
