Los Angeles Chargers in a glance

The Los Angeles Chargers were founded in 1959 and were one of the original teams of the AFL. In 1960, they played their first championship game. The following year, the team's owner, Barron Hilton, moved the Chargers further south to San Diego, motivated by the lack of popularity the team had in Los Angeles. The franchise continued as the San Diego Chargers until 2016. Going back to 1963, the Chargers won their only AFL championship with their exceptional defensive line. Hilton sold the team in 1966, and along with the departure of key players, the Chargers entered a period of mediocrity that ended when the team, under Don Coryell, made four consecutive playoff appearances (1979-1982). The Chargers' next playoff appearance would be in 1992 with Bobby Ross as head coach, and in 1994, during the team's best season, they reached the Super Bowl but were unable to win the championship. The Chargers, who have been owned by Alex G. Spanos since 1984, eventually returned to their founding place in Los Angeles in 2016.
