Kansas City Chiefs in a glance

When entrepreneur from Dallas, Texas, Lamar Hunt, tried to buy the Chicago Cardinals in 1959 and failed, he approached the NFL to create a new team in Dallas. However, the response he received was negative. So he decided to create a new team in Dallas, the Dallas Texans, along with seven other team owners, which joined the newly formed AFL in 1960. After winning an AFL championship in 1962, they moved one year later to Kansas City and took on the name Kansas City Chiefs. In 1966 and 1969, they won the AFL again, and in the latter case, they also won the Super Bowl against the Minnesota Vikings, champions of the NFL. In the 1970s and 1980s, the Chiefs went through a difficult period due to poor draft choices, such as not acquiring Dan Marino as a quarterback. Marty Schottenheimer, who became head coach of the Chiefs in 1988, revitalized the team, and they managed to make the playoffs in consecutive years during that period. The Chiefs had a minor setback for a few years, but they emerged as a contenders again in 2012, and even more so in 2016 with the arrival of Andy Reid as head coach. Along with the acquisition of the highly talented quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, in the draft, and with some very good players, the Chiefs started their era of domination, winning three out of five Super Bowls and four Conference Championships.
