In 1991, the NFL decided to expand the number of teams in the league, and as a result, Jacksonville, Florida welcomed the Jaguars in 1993. The Jaguars participated in the NFL for the first time in 1995. Jacksonville prevailed over larger cities that were favorites for team expansion, despite being a small market. The team initially performed exceptionally well considering its recent creation. In just their second season, they reached the conference championship but were defeated, and they made appearances in the playoffs for the next three years. However, despite their promising start, the Jaguars did not have a similar continuation, and their absence from the NFL playoffs is now the norm rather than the exception.
